A Veneered Salvation

1 Corinthians 2:10-12
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. 11 For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.

A common process used in furniture building, as a form of finish, is by applying a veneer. A veneer is thin piece of wood that is affixed or glued to another piece of wood that enhances the quality and look of the wood. In guitar building, especially in building lesser expensive guitars, veneers are used to add to the look and finish of a guitar. It is a thin layer of wood, a little thicker than a thin piece of cardboard. It is usually added to the top of the guitar to give it more appeal. The body of wood used can be of almost any material such as mahogany, maple, basswood, ash, etc. More expensive or hand crafted guitars are made with a full cap of maple or other decorative piece of wood. A cap is usually about 1/4 inch thick. Thus, adding to the tonal quality and overall cost.

As we go through life and all of its experiences, we might only take time to cover ourselves in some sort of veneer. Unfortunately, and sadly, there are people who are being deceived into a false sense of salvation, by way of a veneered, or better yet, watered-down gospel.

Salvation is the beginning of knowing God. By virtue of His grace through the redemptive work of the cross where Jesus spilled His blood for the forgiveness of our sins, we are not merely covered in a sheer thin coating of salvation.

His true salvation is permanent. Salvation is more like that full cap of good and pristine wood that covers our worldly flesh and the sin that sits there. Some veneers have a way of deteriorating after some time. We have an old sewing machine cabinet, and most of the veneer has chipped away over the years, exposing the raw wood underneath.

If you really want to know God more, then may I suggest to you to make sure your salvation is solid and secure. If you believe you can lose your salvation, then you will live in fear everyday and never be at peace. If the world becomes first over God, then I suggest you check your salvation to see if it is indeed good and pristine.

We may never really know everything about God as Paul says, but we can know Him by His love for us. Moreover, we can knw Him by trusting and placing our faith in His Son, Jesus, and by His word.

Your servant in Christ,

Pastor Tom
