Hebrews 2:1
Therefore we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away
One of the things most of us struggle with in our faith, is living with a neglectful and casual attitude for spiritual things. We neglect reading our bibles. We neglect praying. We excuse ourselves from fellowship because other things draw our attention away from God.
I admit, shamefully, that I have fallen victim to neglect. I have failed to give 100% in following Jesus. Over the years, I have neglected to read my bible, to pray, and to join the fellowship of other believers.
This is not easy for me to admit, but it's true! As a man called by God to preach and minister the word of God, I have failed at times to fulfill my calling - especially when I knew better! The remnant of my neglect rears up its ugly head and I am wrought with guilt and shame. All because I knew better than to neglect my calling, and moreover, my salvation.
The writer of the letter to the Hebrews reminds us all to be alert of who we are in Christ, and to what we have heard regarding the gospel that led us to salvation in Christ in the first place. The scripture is clear: we must give the more earnest heed to the things we have heard, lest we drift away.
If you untie the mooring lines from a boat, it won't take long before the current of the waters will cause the boat to drift away from the dock. Before you know it, the boat has drifted out to the middle of nowhere.
This is a perfect example for all of us to remember, that if we loosen ourselves from the anchor - that is Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of our faith - and neglect our salvation, we will drift into the abyss without rescue in sight.
Your servant in Christ,
Pastor Tom
