Beware of the Smiling Devil Within

2 Peter 2:19
While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.

“The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws.”

― Tacitus, The Annals of Imperial Rome

I have lived upon this orb of rock and dirt for 64 years now. The older I get, the more in tune I become with my surroundings - especially with what is going on in the world today. The more I watch and listen, the more is revealed to me just how corrupt and evil this generation has become, to wit the politician or media nobles, or corporate conglomerates.

Corruption and evilness has been embedded deeply into the fabric of government, social media, and community, as they promote the false sense of security and lie through their crooked smile, telling us that everything is going to be all right. Trust us!

But it comes to me as no surprise, for I know what the word of God has to say about these days. You don't have to be a scholarly or theological genius to understand that this world is not going to survive much longer if it keeps going in the direction it is heading. That too is foretold in the Scriptures. Personally, I'm okay with that because it means the Lord Jesus' return isn't too far off!

I think Tacitus is right when he said, "The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws." Seems like everyday, someone in power is creating a new set of laws to keep people at bay and pinned down all in the name of what's best for them. All the while creating an atmosphere of immense power and control that welcomes all forms of corruption and evil.

The problem of corruption is nothing new. In fact it is as old as time itself. Once sin entered into the heart of man, there has been a great propensity to be enticed to allow corruption weave itself in and develop a greedy hunger for power and lust.

The other problem is that when those with power are corrupted, especially in political realms, there is an urgency to make laws that suit and feed their lusts and greed, and keep them in control.

This is not only fueled by greed, but also by hatred. Hatred towards anyone who objects or protests the corruption and evil. The Prophets of old were killed by power hungry kings and rulers. Christ was crucified at the hands of corrupt people. All because their corruption nurtured a hatred for anything good that stands in their way. And it continues to this very hour.

Should we fear this corrupt world we live in? If more laws, and edicts are forced upon this nation, are we to simply cower in fear? NO! For the bible contains all the hope we could ever ask for is by way of the finished work Jesus Christ did on the cross, who died for you and me to give us forgiveness of our sins and evil lives, that otherwise would have condemned us to die and be eternally separated from God.

Instead of shaking in your boots, let us be praying for those who have been corrupted that God will tender their hearts and convict them to repent and turn to Jesus for absolution of their sins.

Things may look a bit bleak right now, but take solace in what God has promised - that He works all things together for good, to those who love Him and have been called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28). It all ends well for those who stay the course, remain pure and in right standing with the Lord.
