Lamentations 3:22-24
22 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
As we rapidly approach another New Year, many will be putting pen to paper their New Year's Resolutions. These are things that people do to remind themselves of things they want to do or things they want to change or do differently from the previous year.
Some of these things may include losing weight, getting in better shape, work harder for a promotion, changing attitudes and outlooks on life, or maybe getting right with God and go to church more. The problem is with this is that most will never remember to follow through and the resolution is only as good as the paper it is written on.
The reason may be due to a person's heart and desire to truly change the past. However, if we look closely to what we understand our lives to be, the only real outcome to change is by God changing us from the inward. It comes down to our faith and hope in Him. Otherwise, if left to ourselves to change us from the inside out, we will surely fail and never check off the resolution from our list.
Our human nature often prevents us from allowing God to be in control over our dreams, ambitions, goals or resolutions. We think we know ourselves better, and thereby will try to manipulate ourselves into believing we can handle it on our own.
The only reason, whether you believe it or not, that we are still breathing and living today, is because of God and by His mercy. His faithfulness and compassion for humankind is so great for us that by His mercy and grace we live.
Not only that, but because His compassion being new every morning, we can rest easy in His love and walk through another day regardless the challenges, obstacles and temptations we might face. That is our hope.
But it should also be a strong reminder that without Jesus through His birth, His life and His sufferings of the cross where He died to forgive us our sins, there is no hope. There is no faith. There is no life but eternal hellfire and damnation.
As the New Year comes, God willing, let us not just make a resolution that we may never keep. Rather, let us make a faithful vow to love God with all our heart, mind and soul, and love one another. This world sure could use a lot more of that.
