When Things Get Tough, Keep On Keepin' On!

1 Corinthians 15:58
Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.

When I look back at the time when I came to myself and returned to the Lord after so many years of living like a prodigal, I began to immerse myself in the God's good graces. Not only did I return to the Lord, but got back into church and became involved in the work of the ministry.

First, as a member of the worship team, then set apart as a deacon, and eventually ordained as a minister. Those times were, and still are, filled with lots of joy. But they were and are still filled with many challenges. Mostly because of the world and culture we live in. And the fact that ministry is awfully hard work than most even realize.

There have been times I questioned my inadequacy and effectiveness, and nearly gave up. For I thought that once I was ordained and became a pastor, things would be smooth sailing... yeah right... quite the opposite.

For the times I felt like I was subpar and desired to go back and just sit in a pew, I came to a pivotal and realistic reality. after reading what the Apostle Paul had endured in his ministry, I had nothing to complain about. I was never beaten with rods, stoned and left for dead, and never once shipwreck.

I also looked to Jesus and what He went through. He gained lots of followers, but He also face many who rejected and ridiculed Him, ultimately being put to death for a crime or sin He never committed.

When I look at what these two went through and what hardships they faced as they were doing God's work, I realized that what I had gone through in my short time of ministry pales in comparison. So, I press on, even when it gets so tough, and I have a inkling to give up.

If you are facing tough times, not only of worldly things, but moreover, spiritual things, I urge you stop and consider what the Paul and Jesus, among many others of the faith had faced in their lifetime as followers of Jesus.

Perhaps some among us have quit and walked away. They will surely regret that decision later. As for me, I know I am not perfect and am in total need of Christ Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit to keep me upright and moving forward - even in tough times. That alone compels me to remain steadfast in the work of the Lord.

The rewards for pleasing God are great if we only learn to persevere and keep on keepin' on!
